Steps to Becoming Qualified to Drive a School Bus
Those interested must take the test required to be a bus driver: CDL Class B General Knowledge 50 questions, Passenger Endorsement 20 questions, School Bus Endorsement 20 questions. This test is taken at the Highway Patrol Driver’s License testing center.
Prospective driver should contact the School Transportation Coordinator or the District Transportation Director or visit the department of motor vehicles to get study information for the tests.
Once prepared, the prospective driver should visit local DMV to take the written test. If the driver is a school district employee, he/she may be granted permission to use this day as a business day to take the test. Once the prospective driver passes the 3 required tests Mississippi, will issue a CDL learner’s permit. After prospective driver receives permit, he/she should contact the District Transportation Director immediately to set up the ELDT training.
The District Transportation Director will arrange the ELDT training with a certified trainer inside the district and communicate the training dates and times to the prospective driver.
Once ELDT training is complete, the prospective driver will do 3rd party testing with a State instructor. The District Transportation Director will arrange this testing.
Once the 3rd party testing is complete, the prospective driver should return to DMV to upgrade their permit to a regular CDL with P and S endorsements.
The driver should give the School Transportation Coordinator a copy of the driver's license and bus card.
The School Transportation Coordinator should give driver’s information to District Transportation Director and School Board Secretary so the driver can be board approved and added to the school district’s insurance.
Once a driver has received his/her CDL and been board approved as a driver, he/she may submit receipts up to $150 of the cost of the testing to the Business Manager to be reimbursed for the cost.
